Year 7 & 8 Mathematics
Mathematics is a subject in which pupils work at different rates and have differing levels of ability. At The Rock Central School, classes are relatively small and mixed ability in nature. Each topic is addressed to the whole class together, although pupils have the opportunity to work at the pace appropriate to themselves, usually in a small group of students of similar ability. In order that all pupils have the opportunity to achieve to the best of their own ability, remediation or extension work are used where necessary. Problem solving, investigations and practical activities (including regular use of computers) are undertaken as an integral part of the curriculum and as part of weekly “maths workshop” lessons. Homework is set as per the School’s homework policy. It is intended that ‘advanced’ ability students will complete the course in weeks 25 - 30 of Year 8, thus giving the opportunity for review and extension work and/or early commencement of Year 9 mathematics working towards level 5.3.
