LOTE is taught to Years 7 and 8 as a composite class to satisfy the 100 hours of compulsory study required by the NSW Department of Education. The major language taught is Japanese. This course is constructed to enable students to communicate effectively, i.e. to understand and to be understood, in a variety of everyday situations. Priority is given to listening and speaking skills before reading and writing. Students also study Japanese culture.
