Word Language Tools Part 1

Word has a range of language tools that can be used to correct spelling and grammer, or find synonyms.

The spell checker can be used to check the spelling and grammer of a whole document. To access this feature click on the icon that looks like a tick with ABC above it. Or from the menu >Tools>Spelling and Grammer (F7 keyboard shortcut).

Spelling and Grammer

This will hightlight all spelling mistakes (including names that Word is not familiar with) and ask you to select the correct spelling from a list of words.

Alternatively you can individually check and correct words. Word will highlight a word it thinks is incorrect by underlining it with a squiggly red line. Move your cursor to that word and >Right click. A menu will appear with a selection of words which can be used to correct the mistake.

Individually check words

Just click on the word from the list of suggestions to rectify the spelling mistake. This is often the better way than checking the whole document. As noted Word does not recognise many names and place-names, and will continue to ask you to correct words like “Hiddink” even though it is not a mistake.
