Open the document we were working on last Computer Skills lesson, the one about the Socceroos. You should find it in the edupublic (P:) drive in the Year 9/10 CompSkills folder.
Read and understand the tutorials titled “Word - Selecting Text” and “Word - Find and Replace”. Then do the following.
- Use the “Find and Replace” feature to replace the former Socceroos coach’s name Guus Hidding with the new coach’s name Graham Arnold.
- From the File menu, click “Page Setup” and change the orientation to “Landscape”
- As described in the “Selecting Text” tutorial, triple click in the selection area to select all.
- On the Standard Toolbar use the column icon to create 3 columns.

- In the edupublic (P:) drive you’ll find a pic of Mark Viduka, insert, resize and wrap text around the image.
- Search and insert a soccer ClipArt.
When you’ve finished your document should look something like this…

Save it then email it to me as an attachment at mark.gilham1@education.nsw.gov.au

Word has a variety of language tools that will not only correct spelling and grammer but help you use a variety of descriptive words by finding synonyms. Also Word can be used to create a “hypermedia” document, connecting your file to the Web or other files (image, text, sound, movie etc) on your hard-drive.
First thing you will need is some text in a Word document. Today we will use a document I have already prepared. The document can be downloaded from the “click here” link below. To download it >Right click on the link>Select “Save Target As..”>Save the document to you Computer Skills folder. Once it has downloaded go to you folder and open the document.
Before you do anything with the document read the tutorials on the left under the heading “Pages” titled “Word Language Tools Part 1″, “Word Language Tools Part 2″ & “Word Tools - Create an External Hyperlink”.
Once you have read the tutorials do the following using the methods explained in the tutorials…
- Spell check the document
- Find synonyms for all words in bold text
- Turn the word “Socceroos” into a hyperlink to the official Football Australia site.
- Turn the words “World Cup” into a hyperlink to the official World Cup site.
- Put your name in the footer (>View>Header and Footer)
- Save your document with your name in the title to the Student Share drive (P drive) in the folder >Y9-10 CompSkills>Word Tools Exercise.

What is “Multimedia?”
Multi- means more than one.
Media- forms of communication. For example text, pictures, sounds, movies, animation.
The Internet was originally a text only medium, even pictures could not be displayed in browsers with text. Computing in general has undergone a revolution over the past 20 years with the growth of “multimedia” applications. From DVD’s and CDROM’s to Web pages that have more in common with television than the original form of the Internet.
One of the best ways to get to know multimedia is to use a simple multimedia tool like Microsoft’s “PowerPoint”. With PowerPoint you can create slide-shows that use a variety of media including text, animation and of course pictures. PowerPoint presentations can also be interactive, but more on that another time.
You task will be to create a slideshow using PowerPoint on one of the planets of the Solar System. First of all you will need to collect your “media” and organise within a directory and folder. Use the Internet to find Web pages with the information you will need. Here is a couple of sites to get you going;

Spreadsheets can be used for many applications from financial book-keeping to statistics. Spreadsheets are more than just rows and columns, a well designed spreadsheet should be “dynamic”. This feature of a spreadsheet means it will change and adapt according to the data input. If the data changes, so too does the results the spreadsheet calculates. To make this happen we use “formulas” and “functions”.
Formulas- A formula is usually used to calculate the result of a small number of cells by using mathematical “operators”. If a large number of cells is involved (a cell range) then formulas can become too long to be practical, this is when we use functions.
Functions- Functions are used to instruct the spreadsheet what to do with a cell range. Functions are words or abbreviated words, for example “SUM” adds the contents of a cell range and ”MAX” finds the highest number in a cell range. There are dozens of functions that perform a variety of calculations.
Have a look at the Spreadsheet Basics page for definitions of fundamental spreadsheet terms.

The next Computer Skills project for you to do is to crete a Newsletter using MS Word. Eventually this will involve formatting a page with a header and footer, re-sizing and inserting images, formatting text and creating text columns.
Here’s an example that I created…

Before you start you need to design the basic element of your Newsletter. This will involve ceating a “free-hand” verion of the Newsletter. Here’s where you need to start;
- Give your Newsletter a name,
- Decide on what your content will be (you must do at least one story that is focused on school events),
- Write your “copy” (”copy” is the words for your stories),
- Storyboard the images you will need (do a free-hand sketch of the images you need).
Once you have designed your Newsletter you will need to how it to Mr Gilham before you begin creating it on the computer.

Creating documents using Microsoft Word allows for the manipulation and display of text and other information. Tables, which are made up of rows and columns that form cells, can be utilized to organize information in your document.

Formatting text, structuring your document, and adding a little bit of aesthetic appeal to your document are just a few ways in which you can use tables in Word. By using tables, you can turn an otherwise dull and unorganized document into a more well-designed and laid-out project.
The tutorials to the left titled “Table Basics” will provide some basic information on the creation and manipulation of tables.
